Some of the puppies who arrive at Sunny Bear Rescue have never known what it feels like to truly relax.
They come from puppy mills, neglect, overcrowded homes, shelters, and other difficult situations where sleeping didn't always mean feeling safe. New sounds can make them jump. A hand reaching toward them can feel frightening. Even a soft bed can be something they've never experienced before.
So we give them time.
They learn that hands can bring gentle scratches instead of fear. That a full food bowl will still be there tomorrow. That blankets are for burrowing, people can be trusted, and the strange new sound in the hallway is probably just another dog doing something ridiculous.
Little by little, fear begins to loosen its grip.
And then one day, you see it.
A puppy stretched out on a soft bed, belly up, paws twitching in a dream, completely unaware of the world around them because they finally know they're safe.
That's one of our favorite rescue milestones.
Sometimes the best sign that a puppy is healing isn't a tail wag or a first kiss.
Sometimes it's simply a really good night's sleep.
